How the cancellation deadline is worked out

The last day to cancel is the next charge date minus the notice period. A gym that charges on 2 February and wants 30 days’ notice has to hear from you by 3 January.

Next chargeNoticeLast day to cancel
2 February30 days3 January
15 March14 days1 March
31 March1 month28 February (29 in a leap year)
1 December3 months1 September

A notice period in months counts calendar months. When the earlier month is shorter, the date moves to its last day, which is why one month before 31 March is the end of February rather than 3 March.

What if the deadline has already passed?

Then that charge can no longer be stopped, and the useful date is the next one. With 30 days’ notice on a monthly plan, the window for each charge closes about when the previous charge lands. The calculator steps forward one billing cycle at a time until it finds a charge whose deadline is still ahead, and tells you which charge that is. A contract that does not renew has no next charge, so it reports that the window has closed.

Common notice periods

  • Streaming and app subscriptions usually need no notice. Cancelling any time before the renewal stops the next charge.
  • Gyms commonly ask for 30 days or a month, sometimes in writing. Consumer NZ explains how gym contracts work.
  • Germany: for consumer contracts signed since 1 March 2022, a contract that has rolled on past its minimum term can be cancelled with at most one month’s notice (Fitbook).
  • Insurance, phone and broadband rules vary by country and by contract. Many fixed-term contracts renew automatically unless you cancel before the term ends.

The calculator does the date arithmetic, not the legal reading. Check your contract for the notice period and for how notice has to be given.

Questions

What is a cancellation notice period?

The time a provider requires between you asking to cancel and the contract ending. If the notice period is 30 days and you cancel with less than 30 days to go before the next charge, you usually pay that charge.

Does the day I cancel count?

Contracts differ on whether the day your notice arrives counts towards the period. The calculator gives the last day under the simplest reading. To be safe, cancel a day or two earlier and keep written confirmation.

Is anything I enter saved?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere. The calendar file is created on your device.

Can I get reminded automatically?

Yes. Lapsa tracks the cancel-by date for every subscription you add, rolls it forward after each charge, and reminds you before it closes.

Know before it renews.

Add your subscriptions once. Lapsa works out every renewal and every cancel-by date from there.
